The Unbearable Weight of Massive Foolishness
Today, we’re going to examine The Fool, the first card in the major arcana of a standard tarot deck.
Let’s start by dispelling preconceived notions of what it means to be a fool. Perhaps you associate The Fool with something negative. Let’s try to create a more positive relationship with The Fool.
The Fool is the main character of the story of the major arcana. Each card tells the story of what The Fool encounters as they journey through life. For now, let’s focus on The Fool alone.
The Fool represents an innocence of sorts. They are wide-eyed and naive. They are inexperienced but optimistic. Focus on the imagery of the card. What do you see?
The figure of The Fool stands open-armed at the edge of a precipice. The whole world is before them, wide with wonder and opportunity. Their face upturned toward the sky, and the sun beams down on them. This card is brimming with possibility.
Now, think about how you relate to The Fool. Are you embarking on a new journey? Would you like to? Have you passed up an opportunity because you were anxious to put yourself in a precarious position?
Take another look at the imagery of The Fool. What else do you see? Perhaps a furry friend by their side? The dog symbolizes a few different ideas, including instinct. Our little friend is telling us to trust ourselves and to go with our gut. See how the dog appears to be mimicking The Fool’s posture? That represents the guidance our companions can offer as we make our way down unknown paths. And our faithful companion also symbolizes the courage it takes to embark on a new journey.
Each journey begins with a single step. Each step you take prepares you for those things that might hinder your progress. You are capable. You are ready.
